Every September, the London Design Fair brings together more than 550 exhibitors from 36 countries for the UK’s biggest event devoted to the design industry. Launched in 2007 in Shoreditch, the creative heart of London, the four-day event has earned a reputation as the go-to trade show during the London Design Festival, hosting the largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands, country pavilions, features and exhibitions. Each year, more than 28,000 influential retail buyers, producers, architects, interior designers, press, designers, and design-savvy public attend to see the latest innovations in furniture, lighting, textiles, materials and conceptual installation from around the world.
We’ve worked with individual London Design Fair exhibitions since we were first established (including several years of 100% Norway) and in 2017 we began working directly with the fair on pioneering shows such as Material of the Year and Dutch Stuff, and were back in the saddle for the 2018 edition. This time, the Zetteler Films crew came along too, charged with making a series of six short films, each focused on a different pavilion/exhibition.
A highlight of the UK design calendar, London Design Fair is an international trade show located in the Old Truman Brewery in east London. In 2018 there were more than 500 exhibitors from 39 countries and an incredible 25,000 visitors.
So much of the wonder behind craft objects is in the making process – how each practitioner shapes raw materials into something new using age-old traditions or techniques of their own making.
If you visited Material of the Year at London Design Fair during LDF 2018, there was one stand that was consistently surrounded by a crowd of amazed faces. Tokyo-based designer Kodai Iwamoto was the man responsible for the hypnotised scrum, as he demonstrated the unexpected making process behind his recycled flower vases.
Buckle up, this year’s London Design Festival looks set to be a good one. With an increasing interest in environmental and social issues, plus some very fun projects to boot, here are the exhibitions, talks and events we can wait to see this year. Only a few sleeps left!

Where you and I might see a waste product – something to be tidied into the bin ASAP – Dutch designer Martijn Rigters sees an opportunity. Experimental far beyond the normal bounds of the word, his practice involves taking commonplace processes and materials and turning them on their head to create radically different outcomes.
