Making its debut at for London Design Fair 2017, Material of the Year is a new annual showcase created to celebrate and explore the materials with the biggest impact on global design today. For the inaugural edition in September, the Fair team chose to demonstrate the chameleonic versatility of Jesmonite® with a site-specific installation by experiment-driven studio PRIN London. Founder Ariane Prin has been working with Jesmonite since 2013, combining it with metallic dust to create unique, evolving surface textures and colours for the vessels of her RUST collection. For London Design FaIr, she applied the technique to the creation of Jesmonite tiles, shaped in tribute to the London brick, which formed a large-scale architectural artwork – one of the centrepieces of London Design Fair and a striking example of Jesmonite’s peerless adaptability as a structural and aesthetic material. PRIN London’s installation was supported by an exhibition of other designers working in Jesmonite, including surface designer Katie Gillies and Maison & Objet 2017 Rising Talent Zuza Mengham.
At Zetteler, we’re in our element when we’re working in the middle of a multifaceted creative collaboration, so the opportunity to help London Design Fair, PRIN Studio and Jesmonite come together and create something spectacular was not one we could pass up. We supported the launch of Material of the Year, helping to make it one of the stand-out showcases of LDF 2017.
