Altrock is a contemporary, low-maintenance and aesthetically beautiful form of terrazzo developed by London-based furniture designer and maker Robin Grasby. Taking the waste materials and byproducts of marble manufacturing – marble flour, marble chips, offcuts and broken slabs – Grasby binds them with a resin base, creating mesmerising decorative surfaces that showcase the raw materiality of the stone.
Robin first developed Altrock for the bespoke interior projects he was working on, when he realised the sheer quantity of offcuts generated in the production of marble. Coupled with the discovery that few UK companies were still engaged in the manufacture of terazzo, this led Grasby to refine the process until he had a recipe for a versatile solid-surface material made from 87% recycled or reclaimed stone. Altrock can be pigmented in a huge range of custom colours, but its pattern is down to chance and the natural look of the stone within it, meaning that no table, worktop, wall covering or tile is ever the same.
We’re excited to tell the world about this new material and its clever inventor; we’ll be helping to raise awareness about the potential of Altrock and its creation story. Of course a great idea is nothing without an application, so we’ll also be forging links between Robin and some of the names in our bulging contacts book, helping to bring him the hospitality commissions he deserves.
Designer Robin Grasby transforms scraps of discarded marble into durable, waterproof and damn gorgeous terrazzo which can be used to make worktops, tiles and even furniture. We follow the process from Robin’s treasure hunt for the choicest slithers around the capital’s marble yards through to casting in his Leyton studio.
