Apparata is the East London-based architecture studio that sets out to unpick the assumptions and conventions of building design, and to embed progressive perspectives in spatial practice. Founded in 2015 by Astrid Smitham and Nick Lobo Brennan, Apparata is driven by the determination to reevaluate, modify and, where necessary replace, existing models of human habitat making, developing and exploring new possibilities for everyday living.
The RIBA chartered practice’s sphere of activity spans architecture, design and research, incorporating buildings, furniture and publication. Its work is defined by a fascination with how things are constructed – from materials and structures to identities and communities. Apparata’s approach and philosophy is best expressed in A House For Artists – winner of the 2023 RIBA London and RIBA National Awards. The highly innovative project addresses many issues found in new housing blocks (lack of adaptability, overheating, sparse outdoor amenities, loneliness to name a few), and places the occupants at the heart of deciding the future of their spaces.
WHAT WE DID FOR Apparata
Having fallen in love with both the idea and execution of A House For Artists when it opened in 2021, we’re thrilled to be working with one of the most exciting architecture firms to emerge in recent years, supporting Apparata as they share their work, communicate their message, and strive to build a better habitat for everyone.
