What if buildings stopped pretending to be permanently pristine but instead embraced the beautiful realities of repair and change? Founded by Phineas Harper, Architecture of Repair is a collective research project exploring the creative, expressive and ecological potential of repair in architecture and beyond. The movement is rooted in the idea that buildings should not exist in stasis, and reacting against the prevailing belief that repair is a sign of weakness – something to be concealed. Architecture of Repair proposes a radical alternative perspective whereby the visible signs of repair deepen and enrich the story of a building or the character of an object. Architecture of Repair’s debut exhibition, ‘Beyond Repair’ at International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in 2024 brought this philosophy vividly to life through a collection of broken found objects, saved from disintegration by the interventions of the collective’s artists and artisans, including: Phineas Harper, Thomas Randall-Page, Kate Bowman, Lucas Facer, Kit Jones, Felix Kary, Smith Mordak, Allegra FitzHerbert, Sanjukta Jitendhar and Martha Summers.
We’re very happy to be able to support Architecture of Repair and amplify its call for a sea change in the way we think about the role and aesthetics of repair in design.
