In 1984, the furniture maker Sean Sutcliffe struck up a friendship with Terence Conran, founded on their shared interest in sustainability, design, and the material possibility of wood. Benchmark was the result. Now approaching its 40th anniversary, the company they founded in the grounds of Conran’s country home is one of the UK’s leading furniture makers. Operating from workshops in Berkshire and Dorset, Benchmark’s team of 70 woodworkers create furniture and timber products of exceptional quality, guided by a mission to ensure every piece contributes to human wellbeing and health, and that sustainability is a priority at every stage of the process, from raw material to finished piece. This approach means that longevity is a key consideration – Benchmark furniture is crafted to last, transcending trends to focus on timeless beauty, natural warmth and quality. The company has therefore become the go-to maker for architects and designers looking for a combination of creativity, sustainable making and finely honed craft skills.
Having worked on a number of projects involving Benchmark – notably several of AHEC’s landmark exhibitions – we’ve built up huge admiration for both the company’s profits and its approach – Benchmark’s ethics are every bit as robust as its furniture. We’re thrilled to be supporting the team on a range of projects and products for 2022.
