Black Females in Architecture is a global membership network and social enterprise dedicated to increasing the visibility of Black and mixed-heritage women in architecture, design and construction. With a membership of more than 450, it represents the shockingly small proportion of Black women working in the built-environment industries. With Black women currently making up less than 1% of the UK’s registered architects, BFA’s work couldn’t be more vital. Founded as both a studio and advocacy group in 2018, the social enterprise delivers sustainable architecture projects while also leading a robust programme of advocacy and education. And whether it’s designing, delivering talks or providing consultancy, the group is committed to driving change across the industry, offering a more expansive and equitable vision for citymaking. Since participating in Lesley Lokko’s Venice Architecture Biennale in 2023, BFA is set to launch projects with RIBA, Black Girl Fest, Open City, V&A and more.
Having admired BFA from afar for some time, it was a chance encounter at their exhibition for the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2023 which led to our partnership today. Zetteler is on board to celebrate this phenomenal network of Black women transforming their sector, and to raise awareness about their impressive work.
