Citizens Design Bureau
Founded in 2013 by the Liverpool-born architect Katy Marks, Citizens Design Bureau are an architecture and design practice who draw on the collective wit and wisdom of the communities they work with to create architecture with huge personality. They balance complex functional requirements with an ecological sensibility, putting a lyrical twist on bold responses to the climate crisis. Whether it’s a design strategy for a community housing project or the redevelopment of a landmark arts space, Citizens Design Bureau are the team you turn to if you want to create architecture that captures the soul of an organisation or community, while being rigorously practical and bringing joy to the people that will use it.
Building on their experience of how sustainability and social value can enhance commercial viability rather than threaten it, Citizens Design Bureau create spaces that are made to be used, lived in and loved. They explore the distinctive chemistry of the people and places where they work, with an approach rooted in collaboration and immersive engagement.
The practice is politically and socially motivated, but it is their architecture that does the talking with work that spans museums and theatres, complex conservation projects, community-led housing, retail and workspace. As well as winning a RIBA National Award in 2023 for the extension of Manchester Jewish Museum, Citizens Design Bureau were named Public Building Architect of the Year at the Building Design Awards 2022 for work including Jacksons Lane Theatre, Studio 3 Arts Centre and the Talent House for UDMusic and East London Dance.
