Create London demonstrates how world-class architecture and art can be woven into the social fabric of everyday life, responding to local context and diverse needs. For over a decade, the charity has evolved from delivering temporary projects as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad to masterminding long-term community-led initiatives across East London and beyond. Rooted in the belief that working in close and ongoing collaboration with local communities can produce transformative – even radical – results, Create commissions artistic and architectural interventions and cultural experiences in areas where they might least be expected. Create London’s remit spans policy and planning, buildings and infrastructure, residencies and public programmes, designed to provide inclusive moments that spark imagination, spur collective action and help communities thrive. Recent projects include Apparata’s House for Artists in Barking – 2023 winner of RIBA’s Neave Brown Award from affordable housing; co-commissioning the Hackney Windrush Art Commissions with Thomas J Price and Veronica Ryan OBE, for which the latter artist won the 2022 Turner Prize; and Grayson Perry’s first public sculpture Inspiration Lives Here in Barking town centre.
Having worked closely with the Create London team on A House for Artists by Apparata in the run up to, and aftermath of, the 2023 RIBA Awards, we’re continuously impressed by their thoughtful, creative and community-led approach to placemaking. We’re proud to be helping them tell the stories of their transformative local projects, including the Wildlife & Wellbeing Trail on Barking Riverside and Flood Structures, an exhibition and workshop series in collaboration with Yasmeen Lari and Material Cultures.
