Based in Lewes, East Sussex, and founded by two former Greenpeace directors – Michael Manolson and Jonathan Smales – Human Nature is a campaigning development company that exists to design and build intrinsically sustainable places, regenerative neighbourhoods and communities in which people can live and thrive.
Aiming to develop a 21st-century template for community development that responds to the cluster of crises we face in climate, nature and health, the Human Nature team is committed to the application of ‘exponential sustainability’ – John Elkington’s term to describe sustainable business models embedded with resilience and innovation, allowing for transformational change.
Human Nature is currently leading the development of the Phoenix in its home town of Lewes – a £500m, 685-home project that, when complete, will be the largest sustainable neighbourhood in the UK. The first homes are scheduled for completion in 2027.Excited by one of the most ambitious and progressive architectural proposals we’ve ever seen, we’ve been closely following the evolution of the Phoenix since its inception. We’re therefore especially thrilled to be working with the Human Nature team in helping it take flight.
