Some architects spend their time developing spectacular, award-baiting building concepts that never see the light of day. Others just get stuff done. Manalo & White is one of the latter. Set up in 1999 by architect Brian Greathead, the London-based practice has spent more than two decades quietly, efficiently and beautifully designing ‘factories, galleries and everything in between.’ Having grown from one-man-band to a talented team of 20, Manalo & White has earned its stripes creating imaginative, pragmatic, user-focused architecture and interiors, delivered with humility and humour. The practice has become especially renowned for arts and cultural projects, creative retrofits (such as the leafy urban oasis that is the Mandrake boutique hotel) and its thoughtful work in student accommodation – a sector in which it is a UK leader. Motivated by inclusivity and empowerment, and with a collaborative, ego-free approach, Manalo & White is the architect you turn to when you need a building that works effectively, brings joy, and stands the test of time.
After more than two decades of understated success, Manalo & White is ready to make some more noise. Zetteler is working with the team to spread the word about their brilliantly diverse portfolio of projects, and their distinctive brand of ‘Magical Utilitarianism’.
