Housed within a row of Grade I-listed almshouses on Kingsland Road, Hackney, Museum of the Home exists to ‘reveal and rethink the ways we live, in order to live better together.’ Having begun life as a museum in 1914 with a focus on furniture and woodwork, it has evolved over the decades, refining its remit to encompass domestic life in all its forms – as expressed through furniture, artworks, images, personal testimonies, and immersive room recreations from past, present and future.
In 2021, after a three-year refurbishment, the museum formerly known as the Geffrye Museum reopened under its current name – Museum of the Home – with a renewed purpose and mission. Its rebranding included confrontation of the legacy of colonialism and transatlantic slavery within its own history – namely the historic connection of the museum buildings to Robert Geffrye, an English merchant who made part of his money from his investment in transatlantic slavery. Today, the unique museum places social engagement and community outreach at the heart of its issues-based programming, exploring stories of home life - past, present and future - to nurture empathy, question conventional thinking, and build shared understanding.
WHAT WE DO FOR Museum of the Home
Zetteler is proud to work with Museum of the Home, not only because of its always-fascinating approach to exploring the life of the home through time, but also because of the fearless way in which the institution continues to interrogate its own history, emerging with a brave and clear commitment to climate action and social justice. We’re working with the museum team as they reach out to new audiences, develop their community, and campaign for better ways for us all to live together.
