Tuckey Design Studio is the architecture practice that sensitively and creatively builds on what’s already there. Established in London by Jonathan Tuckey in 1999, the studio is rooted in the principle of reuse – prioritising regeneration, adaptation, retrofit and the transformation of existing structures to fulfil new roles. In recent years, the practice has pioneered sustainable construction technologies, applying their sensitivity to context and reuse to low-carbon new-build projects. Given their approach, the team are naturally fascinated by the relationship between old and new and the interplay of history and modernity. Working on projects across the UK, Europe and the US, they take the opportunity to explore the contextual connections that a building amasses over its lifespan – its cultural, social and emotional facets, as much as its functional ones – and thereby create projects that are rooted in their place, which preserve the fabric of the past while defining new spaces for living, learning and working in the future.
Huge admirers of Tuckey Design Studio’s retrofit-first mindset and commitment to building sensitively and contextually, we’re working with Jonathan and the team to foreground their latest project, Rammed Earth House in Wiltshire – the first in a series of unique developments championing natural materials and ancient techniques as legitimate solutions for building in the Anthropocene.
