Snaking through the thoroughfares of Walthamstow, from Wood Street to Blackhorse Lane, the William Morris Design Line is a new route that weaves together E17’s creative studios, street art and community-driven design interventions. Launched at London Design Festival 2020, it is the work of a collective of Walthamstow-based creative and community organisations, including Wood Street Walls and Blackhorse Workshop, showcasing the area’s heritage of creativity and resilience, while also aiming to inspire the next generation of creative talent. With the William Morris Gallery located roughly at its centre point, the Design Line is shaped by Morris’ principles of craft, unity, community and simplicity, and its inaugural edition incorporated a series of events, activities and installations responding to each of these four themes. The works created for the launch included Towards a New Normal, a bold, vividly coloured mural on the steps of Waltham Forest College, created by designer and artist The Fandangoe Kid in collaboration with the college’s students.
We were excited to be asked to jump into the William Morris Design Line just before its launch, helping the project team ensure news of this inventive, educational and inspiring community-powered initiative reached the LDF audience.
