Every morning, while it is still dark, the saltworkers of southwest Mauritius step out into the shadows of the Black Mountains to harvest the Indian Ocean’s minerals – in a method that has remained unchanged for almost two centuries. Brine is pumped from the sea though a series of basalt-bedded pools, where it evaporates in the hot, dry air to leave behind a layer of white crystal on the black rock. In this film – one of a series made for the new Mauritian hotel SALT of Palmar – Spa and Wellness Manager Kerensa Langitan takes us to the salt pans of Tamarin to show us the story behind one of the island’s most important and versatile substances, and the central role it plays in the hotel’s spa treatments.
