Dubbed “industrialised craft” by designer Samuel Wilkinson, the process behind his Latis chair for The Conran Shop marries age-old Italian craftsmanship with technical precision. We went with Samuel and Campbell Thompson, The Conran Shop’s head of furniture and lighting, to the second-to-none Italian furniture factory to film the production of Latis, from steam-bending and CNC milling to the meticulous (and very satisfying to watch!) process of affixing the rattan back by hand flush into its cunningly designed grooves. Based on a classic typology, Latis has been designed – like all products at The Conran Shop – to be a future collectible, that will age beautifully because of the quality and honesty of the material.
