Design Can launches Jobs Board Campaign’s third birthday brings new services, tools and identity
Since it was launched in August 2019, the campaign for equity and representation in the creative industries has grown significantly, more and more people have been getting on board, spreading the word, using its resources, and actively working towards a more inclusive design sector. We’re excited to announce that Design Can has entered its fourth year with a stash of new arrows in its quiver.
Now open to patron funding from both organisations and individuals (early hat-tips to Kickstarter, Pearson Lloyd, Universal Design Studio and RDI for their support), Design Can has launched a Jobs Board, giving equity-conscious organisations an opportunity to promote creative vacancies to the platform’s extensive network – and beyond. Check out the Jobs Board – and other new tools and resources – on Design Can’s freshly revamped website.

LDF highlight: Change Making by Pearson Lloyd 25 years of designing for the future
Since Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd founded their practice in 1997, the world – and with it, the design landscape – has transformed. Throughout that time, Pearson Lloyd has responded to, preempted, and helped drive change. Their LDF exhibition Change Making at Yorkton Workshops uses 25 years of Pearson Lloyd design to explore the ways in which how and what we design – and the materials we use – have evolved in the face of the complex and increasingly urgent challenges faced by people and planet.
As well as a fantastic opportunity to get an in-depth insight into some of the key projects that have turned Pearson Lloyd into one of the UK’s leading industrial-design studios – from rethinking A&E departments to redefining the workspace – Change Making is an invitation to consider the role and responsibility of design in a changing world.
Change Making is at Yorkton Workshops in Hackney on 19–25 September.

LDF highlight: We Are Here at the Rio by Sound Advice A celebration of migrant voices in words, music and film
On 18 September, the Rio Cinema in Dalston plays host to a day-long celebration of diasporic communities and their contribution to the urban and cultural realm. Curated by Spandana Gopal, Manijeh Verghese and Debika Ray, We Are Here is an afternoon party devoted to migrant-created design and culture, featuring a programme of migrant-made music and short films that open windows into the moments of community connection that occur when people come together informally.
Our friends at Sound Advice – the platform exploring spatial practice through music (and creator of Now You Know) – have lined up the DJs and created a film artwork exploring the rituals that diasporic communities deploy in order to be represented. There’ll also be an opportunity to see artist Chila Kumari Burman’s Ice Cream Van sculpture, originally commissioned by the Tate in 2020, installed in the Rio’s foyer. (Oh, and bonus fact: the event identity and T-shirt design is by Design Can identity-designer Wei Prior.)

Atelier100’s exclusive collection launches in November Mentorship programme supports London-based designers
We’re excited to be working with Atelier100 and its new mentorship programme to nurture designers and makers working within 100km of London. For the last few months, the inaugural cohort of 14 creatives has been finessing the launch collection of furniture, fashion and homeware – set to be unveiled at Atelier100’s Hammersmith concept store and creative centre in November.
We’ll have more to say about the designers and products in the weeks to come, but in the meantime, we can reveal that the collection is materially inventive and creatively envelope-pushing. Expect car-exhaust furniture, candleholders pigmented with London brick dust, and handmade ceramic vessels made with clay excavated during the construction of sewers beneath the Thames.

JA Projects to design V&A East’s ‘Why We Make’ galleries… …and reinvent Redchurch Street
Jayden Ali’s community-driven (and increasingly in-demand) architecture practice JA Projects is turning its focus to East London, having recently secured two headline projects. First, the studio has just been named the winner of the V&A’s competition to design the forthcoming V&A East Museum’s ‘Why We Make’ galleries, alongside graphic design studio A Practice for Everyday Life, and artist Larry Achiampong. Their dynamic joint vision of ‘a museum between cultures’ is rooted in the diversity of East London and will be unveiled when V&A East opens in 2025.
Plus, just down the road, the JA Projects team are busy delivering a community-led programme to establish a new collective identity for Redchurch Street, working with residents, businesses and stakeholders to reinvent the public realm and help the community re-engage with the area. If you’d like to speak to Jayden about either project, just let us know.

TOG and POoR Collective launch Makers + Mentors programme Three young designers to produce furniture for The Black & White Building
Ahead of the official opening of The Black & White Building in Shoreditch this winter, TOG and POoR Collective have announced the launch of their Makers + Mentors programme. Three student designers will be chosen to create furniture or artwork to be permanently installed in the landmark mass-timber building, with the only stipulations being that the piece created should reflect the project’s emphasis on sustainable materials and social connectivity. Based on their skills, materials and interests, each of the students will be paired with one of three expert mentors (Matteo Fogale, Sebastian Cox and Andu Masebo), and will be working alongside them, TOG and POoR to create their object and find the perfect home for it in the building. The programme aims to champion sustainable, socially conscious design while giving next-generation London designers the opportunity to gain practical, career-building experience. Stay tuned to see the finished pieces. Explore The Black & White Building

Barbara Chandler’s sustainable student design showcase returns for a second edition
From seaweed biscuits to mycelium vases, ‘slow’ ceramics to green-timber furniture, student showcase Green Grads presents an extraordinary – and reassuring – overview of the talents and technologies shaping the sustainable future of design. Founded and curated by Barbara Chandler and taking place at the Samsung Experience Space in Coal Drops Yard on 24–25 September, the show’s second edition features around 50 new graduates hand-picked by Barbara from universities and colleges across the UK.
Spanning the full spectrum of design disciplines, the students are tackling the planet’s most pressing concerns head-on, touching on topics ranging from circular production and repurposing waste to the return to natural materials and craft to designing in collaboration with organic life. Last year’s show brought more than 2,000 people through the door, so expect a crowd.
