Alex Booker: New Works on Supermarket Sarah

This is my second wall for Supermarket Sarah; a lot of fun for me as last year's was a huge success, but I still learned a few things from it: There needed to be more works, more differentiated price points and a little more effort on the styling and images, which I hope I've improved this time round.

I picked these pieces from a much larger body of prints to display the highlights from my year in the studio and life at large. The works were also chosen for how they would relate to each other when hung (which is not easy!) There are loads missing, but they’ll be added to my soon-to-launch online shop.

'Highland' was a response to some of the most inspiring scenery I've ever seen – while I was rowing, cycling and hiking up in Scotland for the human rights charity Standing Voice – and is possibly the start of a new series. That trip sparked a lot in my imagination and refuelled my zest for travelling and nature – the scale and awe of it all. I took loads of pictures on the road and created numerous sketches that I used when I got back to the studio.

The numeric and alphabetic nautical signal flags has been an on-going project throughout 2015. It's been fun not only to create bespoke collections for people, but also to be able to sell some of the woodblocks themselves after printing – they do become rather beautiful little sculptures in their own right. I've become a little less precious about them, so I can sell the blocks and re-cut them as they're not part of an editioned series (I do individually title, sign and date everything before sending, though).

The use of colour is becoming more important to me and I’m also moving away a little from the nautical. My family’s maritime history will always be a vital part of what I do and who I am, but I've loved experimenting with other landscapes, cultures and expressions.

Recently, I spent a day making a documentary with Andy Dunn about my work and it was a real honour – he makes brilliant films. We share many interests and I'm really pleased with how it came out, though it is very strange to see myself on screen when I am usually represented by what I make. His directing style is the perfect complement to my work, and I'm very grateful that I can now open a little window into my studio and why I do it to anyone in the world.

The idea of people owning my works in their homes and workplaces makes me feel deeply pleased, so I've also been conscious of including something for everyone on my wall this year. Prices start from £35, despite it all still being handmade in every way. The signal flags, 'Lighthouse' and 'Banked' pieces are proving the most popular so far – so get your orders in quick!
