Watching the Instagram snaps of Camille Walala’s 40m-high mural in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park trickle in over the past few days has kept us firmly tethered to our phones, eagerly awaiting more. Luckily the wait is over. The seven-storey artwork – her tallest to date – opens this week as part of WantedDesign Brooklyn’s NYCxDESIGN programme.

With the big reveal today, Camille’s tallest-ever mural is just as eye-wateringly colourful as you’d expect from the London-based designer. Covering a block of artists studios on in the heart of Brooklyn, Camille’s design to reinvigorate the gargantuan structure was inspired by the repeated patterned formed by the windows of the building – alongside her usual inspirations of pattern by the Ndebele tribe, Memphis Movement and Optical Art master Victor Vasarely. The punchy colour palette was inspired by sunset – not just the name of the park where the building is located but also because of the joyful hues that dance over the architecture at dusk.
