Not the most enticing opening sentence is it? We get it, GDPR sounds lacklustre and all a bit daunting. While you probably have a million better things to do than get your head around the complexities of an EU mega law, this one is pretty important. We recommend that you take a minute or two to clue yourself up.
In a nutshell, GDPR is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union. Its primary aim is to give control back to individuals when it comes to their own personal data. No longer will companies be able to store an individual's data without their permission and even if they had permission, the company will now have to prove it. Failure to do so could result in hefty fines.
In the long term, GDPR is a great thing – control over your own data = very good news – in the short term, it is likely to get a bit chaotic. As the deadline creeps up, no doubt you’ll receive hundreds of emails from companies asking you to re-subscribe.
