The desks have been rearranged at Zetteler HQ. And that means one of two things: either Sabine is preparing for another human sacrifice, or the team has expanded (or very, very occasionally, both).
Last week, we welcomed our new PR manager, Jodi Moss, to the fold (thanks go to Modern Design Review’s Laura Houseley for sending her to us). Jodi joins us with a shit-ton of experience in the London design world and her own PR company under her belt, and we’re looking forward to the exciting possibilities of both a new creative brain on the team and a new lackey on the tea round.
So, in the first of our new ‘meet the team’ series we’ve just this second decided to feature on the Zetteler blog, here’s Jodi in her own words…
Can you tell us a bit about the journey you’ve taken to Zetteler’s door?
I moved to London seven years ago from my hometown in sunny Swansea. Shortly after graduating with a degree in 3D design, I started working for one of London's design galleries, Mint. Owner, design curator, collector and trendsetter Lina Kanafani introduced me to some of the most influential designers on the planet and that’s where I began working in PR. After my stint in South Kensington I found myself in the heart of Shoreditch, working for furniture manufacturer and retailer SCP. Between then and now I've been working as the communications manager at Cockpit Arts (a business incubator for craftspeople) and as advertising manager at product design publication Modern Design Review while offering PR support to a selection of independent design retailers.
How did you end up choosing the design industry for your career?
It's all my parents fault. My dad is a carpenter and my mum makes jewellery. They are the reason I became infatuated with designland.
What do you think differentiates Zetteler from the ever-growing number of PR agencies popping up out there (if anything)?
I've been following Zetteler for some time and love their (our) creative approach to PR and storytelling. The News & Ideas section of the website is great too because it contains stories and interviews from clients as well as other artists, designers and brands who they (we) believe are doing great things.
After your first couple of days in the squad, what do you expect to be doing here?
Working with great people! The team is super focused, hard working and creative. I'm so excited I get to be a part of that. Day to day, I'll be working as part of the PR team, which is made up of Dorothy, Sabine and me.
Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to working on at this stage?
Designing for a better world. The designers and design organisations that are investing in their communities and using design and creativity to help others instead of helping themselves. This year's Turner Prize winners, Assemble, are a perfect example of that. They were given the award for their project in Liverpool's Granby Four Streets. It revolved around the refurbishment of a group of houses in a community in Toxteth that had been ground down, ignored and disenfranchised over the years, with houses demolished or left to rot. Aside from the refurbishment of 10 houses, Assemble worked with the community to establish Granby Workshop, a social enterprise selling items for the home, some of them made from the rubble of demolished buildings. There's a beautiful pair of Granby Workshop bookends sitting in Zetteler HQ.
Do you have a favourite designer/design brand?
Michael Marriott. I'm a huge fan of his work. The installation he designed for SCP's 30th Anniversary is my favourite recent project of his. Also he's the only person I've ever witnessed purchase an entire jar of pickled eggs in a pub.
If you have one, what’s your current pet hate?
Pokémon Go.
Specialist subject on Mastermind?
Glastonbury Festival. My parents are pros and have been working there since 1999. My sister and I have always been lucky enough to go along with them, although I'm quite glad I missed this year's swampfest.
If you could recommend one thing for Londoners to do to connect with their city, what would it be?
Shop local. There are so many wonderful independent retailers and markets in London. I think it's my favourite thing about London and a great way to meet people in your community.
Favourite member of the team so far? :)
Haha.
