“This issue has been a reminder that while the world of type is changing fast to meet new demands, it’s also holding true to its core principles,” writes Emma Tucker in her Editor’s Letter for the Summer 2017 issue of The Recorder. “Whatever environment it lives in – painted as giant letterforms on buildings, transformed into three dimensions or carefully placed into an archive – its power as a tool for communication is undeniable, and unbeatable.”
The fifth issue of Monotype’s biannual magazine, TheRecorder, goes on sale today. The Recorder comprises over 100 pages of typography and graphic design and, through an eclectic offering of features written by an array of accomplished journalists, seeks to explores the role of typography in a wider cultural context.
The Recorder #5 is all about going back to basics. The pages seek to rediscover how type is an essential tool of expression for brands, and also leap forward into the future to see how virtual reality and augmented environments are taking type into the 3D realm.
Highlights of this issue include: an interview with designer David Rudnick, a look at the ways women’s movements have harnessed graphic design, a feature exploring how type is being adapted for new digital worlds, and a Type Mixtape in which graphic design titan Paula Scher selects her ten favourite typographic projects from her career.
The magazine features illustrations by Braulio Amado and Matt Chase and words from Laura Snoad, Luc Benyon, Theo Inglis, Angela Riechers, Madeleine Morley and Nicole Phillip.
