Monotype’s font marathon comes to London
Back in May 2015, inspired by designer Nadine Chahine’s self-inflicted challenge to create a new typeface in only one weekend, globally-recognised type foundry Monotype hosted its first ever font marathon. Calling on two of its rising type stars, Monotype tasked Toshi Omagari and Jim Ford with creating two entirely new fonts under intense time-pressure. Locked in their New York offices for five days, the designers successfully created two new type designs. Fast-forward 18 months and the race to create in a limited time period is back, but this time it’s in London.
Typically taking months or years to design, creating a new typeface from scratch is an epic task, but as you sit and read this post typeface designers Terrance Weinzierl and Hendrik Weber are holed up in Monotype’s London offices in a bold attempt to produce another two new fonts in only a week.
Managed on-site by Nadine Chahine, the two designers are working independently the create something unique. This will not only be an opportunity for Monotype to showcase the incredible talent of its designers, but they will also be supporting charity Room to Read, a San Francisco-based charity committed to partnering with communities across Asia and Africa to promote literacy and education for girls.
Last year’s font marathon typefaces, “Esca” and “Cowhand”, are available to purchase through Monotype’s web store, soon to be joined by Terrance Weinzierl and Hendrik Weber’s creations.
