Now open: Hilos Invisibles
- Written by Laura.
Mastermined by Uruguay-born, London-based designer Matteo Fogale, Hilos Invisibles brings together seven Montevideo studios to create brand new work inspired by Modernist architect Julio Vilamajó Echaniz.
From a chair that riffs on Vilamajó’s use of to-hand materials like stones, straw and wood, to a light series that mimics how the architect harnessed the movement of the sun, the show at The Aram Gallery is both a deep dive into one of the most important Uruguayan architects and a snapshot of some of the most exciting design studios operating in the capital today.

As part of a residency at the Museum Casa Vilamajó,Matteoimmersed himself in the archive of the architect, then invited seven Montevideo practices – Carolina Palombo, Claudio Sibille, CLARO, Menini-Nicola, Muar, Studio Diario and Rafael Antía – to take part in week-long workshops. Scouring his sketches, letters, plans and blueprints, the eager investigators found intriguing details, some concrete, some abstract, and then used them to collaboratively develop new pieces with Matteo inspired by Vilamajó’s legacy.

We could wax lyrical endlessly about the social enterprises behind Carolina Palombo’s Tutura easy chair or the process that powered CLARO’s Medianera lamps, but why listen to us prattle on when you could see the gorgeous things for yourself. Hilos Invisibles runs at The Aram Galleryuntil 27 October.
