The work of human rights charity Standing Voice is something very close to our hearts. For the past 12 years, it’s been working with the community of Ukerewe Island, Tanzania, home to one of the country’s largest populations of people with albinism. Not only is Sabine a Trustee, but three of our team are raising money for the charity by running the Hackney Half Marathon this month. And as the icing on the cake, we’ve curated the next round of Standing Voice’s Summer Skills Workshops, sending Zetteler collaborators Camille Walala and Alex Booker to share their impressive talents with the island’s families.
In sub-Saharan Africa, albinism can be a life-threatening condition. First, there’s the increased risk of skin cancer, then the stigma that it carries within some communities means that people with the condition are often denied essential health and education services, ostracised and even risk being maimed or murdered. Much of this comes from the belief that those with albinism are cursed, or that their body parts can bring good fortune.

And here’s where Standing Voice comes in. Alongside its medical programmes, which address visual impairment and cancer prevention, part of its work includes breaking down stigma through education and workshops. Not only is this an opportunity for people with albinism to learn new creative skills and build their confidence, but the workshops bring Ukerewe’s communities together regardless of skin colour.
Standing Voice launched its Summer Skills Workshop last year, with printmaker Alex Booker hosting woodblock printing classes in the purpose-built Umoja Training Centre. This year he’ll return alongside ‘queen of colour’ designer Camille Walala and her collaborator Julia Jomaa and designer-maker Simon Sawyer.

As well as holding workshops over a two-week programme, the Zetteler-assembled gang will make their mark of the training centre itself. Camille and Julia are set to cover the community’s water tanks, transform its library with her trademark use of colour and new radio production lab in pattern, Simon will fabricate new tables, stools and shelves for the centre. The programme will end with an exhibition in London in November 2018, raising awareness and funds for the charity’s life-changing work.
