Standing Voice Photo Diary: International Albinism Awareness Day
-by Milly Burroughs
You might recall that the last time we checked in with Standing Voice they had just launched a three year partnership with Vision For Life. As huge believers in their incredible work, and with Sabine being a long-term friend and trustee of the charity, we were keen to catch up with the team in the UK and Tanzania to find out what they’ve been up to since their Vision Programme event in Mwanza.
We were more than a little excited when they sent over a gorgeous series of photographs documenting another life-changing event for International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD). Held on June 13 at Umoja Training Centre (recently opened by Standing Voice) on Ukerewe Island in Tanzania's Lake Victoria, the IAAD celebrations were “pretty spectacular”, in the words of Communications and Fundraising Officer Sam Clarke.
Taken by Imogen Freeland for Standing Voice, this moving photo diary chronicles the many events of the day, which included speeches delivered by representatives of district government, Standing Voice and the Ukerewe Albinism Society, as well as Skin Cancer Prevention clinics, Vision Programme clinics, lots of fun creative activities and the island’s first ever screening of the incredibly moving In the Shadow of the Sun documentary directed by founder Harry Freeland.
