Today, NOW Gallery unveils Camille Walala’s neck-craning, mind-bending, three-dimensional maze. The maze is a lot of things, but above all, it’s fun. Bring your jazzy socks and camera phone.
WALALA X PLAY is an immersive maze that comprises a labyrinthine network of passageways and enclosed spaces, decorated in Camille’s distinctive bold and colourful patterns. There’s a hell of a lot going on: walls of different heights, passageways of different widths, an assortment of curved and zigzag paths, suspended shapes and mirrored panels. The design of WALALA X PLAY centres on two major concepts: play and disorientation. The sheer physicality of the installation has been purposely designed to encourage visitors to have an increased awareness of their bodies, engage their minds and give themselves over to play.
WALALA X PLAY will be on show until 24 September and rather than remain static, the maze will evolve throughout the three months that it is housed inside NOW Gallery. People are encouraged to visit the installation on multiple occasions and use their discerning eye to spot subtle changes in the design, shouting about it on social media using the hashtag #WALALAXPLAY.
The installation was commissioned by NOW Gallery founding curator Jemima Burrill, a keen purveyor of experimental and immersive design. You can check out Jemima’s thoughts on the installation, as well as her wider ambition for NOW Gallery, in Zetteler’s interview with the curator here.
